Rules
Argue hard about the world. Leave the real people behind the citizens alone.
The line: behaviour, not opinion
Online Citizenry is a game about politics, so expect political speech. We moderate behaviour, not opinions, and we apply the same rules to popular and unpopular players.
In-fiction nationalism, insults between fictional nations, rivalry, satire and aggressive campaigning are the game working. Attacking the real people behind the citizens is not.
What gets removed
We remove the following and sanction whoever posted it:
- Harassment: targeting a real person, threats, or following someone around the game to abuse them.
- Doxxing: sharing anyone's real name, address, photos, workplace or other personal details without their consent.
- Slurs and hate aimed at people for their ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or sexual orientation.
- Real-world extremism: recruiting for, promoting or glorifying real extremist or terrorist groups or their violence.
- Illegal content of any kind, including sexual content involving minors, which we also report to the authorities.
- Sexually explicit or gory material.
- Spam and advertising, including links to other games or services and repeated posting of the same text.
- Impersonation of staff, of other players, or of real people and organisations.
The same rules cover names of citizens, companies, parties, banks and newspapers. A name that breaks them is changed.
Fair play
- One account per person. In a game where votes make the law, a second account is a stolen vote. Accounts that share a person are closed, and what they gained is reversed.
- No bots or scripts beyond the standing orders the game itself provides.
- No exploiting bugs. If you find one, report it rather than using it.
- No real-money trading of accounts, money or items. In-game money has no real-world value, as the Terms explain.
What happens when the rules are broken
Depending on how serious it is and whether it has happened before, we may:
- remove or hide the content;
- change a name;
- give a warning;
- suspend the account for a period;
- close the account permanently;
- reverse money, items or votes gained by breaking the rules.
We tell you what we did and why. A person decides every sanction; no automated system bans anyone.
Appeals
If you think a decision is wrong, write to abuse@onlinecitizenry.com within six months, say which decision you mean and why it should change. We look at it again, tell you the outcome and our reasons, and reverse the decision if it was a mistake. A different moderator from the one who decided handles the appeal whenever the team allows it.
How to report
Use the Report control on the post, article or comment, or email abuse@onlinecitizenry.com. For an email report, include:
- a link to the content or the citizen's page;
- what is wrong with it, and which rule or law it breaks;
- your name and email address, unless you are reporting child sexual abuse material;
- that you believe the report is accurate and made in good faith.
We confirm we have received it, act without undue delay, and tell you what we decided. If someone's life or safety is at risk, contact the police first. We report threats to life or safety to the authorities.
